Pushing Past Your Plateau


Last week’s blog was an appeal to “Keep Climbing” because those that follow us deserve leaders who continue to grow and develop. It’s demoralizing to be led by persons who seem more tired than inspired and whose actions indicate that their best days are behind them.


A plateau is a silent assassin to potential and a breeding ground for future regrets. Leaders that plateau slowly become the type of leaders that they themselves hate to follow.

The leadership plateau is a phase or period that is marked by a stall in upward mobility and a lack of opportunity for promotions, raises, educational advancements, and higher socio-economic levels. However, a more prevalent (and even more dangerous) type of leadership plateau indicates the absence of spiritual, intellectual, physical, or emotional development.


Taking our leadership to another lever doesn’t happen automatically. In the midst of daily and weekly responsibilities it is easy understand why so many leaders fail to prioritize their own advancement and enhancement.


So instead of progressing, they plateau and have no idea how to start rising again.


Here are 9 indicators of a plateaued leader:

  1. Lacks a strategy or plan for personal growth and development

  2. Doesn’t take initiative to expand one’s knowledge base

  3. Has little to no enthusiasm for one’s leadership responsibilities and duties

  4. Feels stuck or trapped in a role, position or job, with no prospects for advancement

  5. Feels as if one’s voice, ideas and freedom are constantly stifled

  6. Holds a pessimistic view of one’s organization and surroundings

  7. Is disillusioned and lacks hope that circumstances will change for the better

  8. Feels threatened by and jealous of the progress of others

  9. Uses more energy maintaining the status quo instead of making necessary changes that will increase impact and effectiveness


If you find yourself fitting at least three of these indicators, then you are most likely a plateaued leader. The great news is that you can begin a plan of progression TODAY:

  • Start by picking one area of growth… just one.

  • Then take your time and write 2-3 goals for this area.

  • Choose a few simple action steps to fulfill these aspirations.

  • Then get to work.
